In order to support our students, PTA sponsors events to build community, enrich education, and raise funds.
o Tiger Trot: Students participate in a 1-mile fun run with snacks, drinks, and other activities. In addition to being a great community building event, Tiger Trot is a fundraiser. Classes raising the most money enjoy a sweet treat from Kona Ice.
o Skate Parties: Skate City graciously hosts Tomahawk a few nights each year. Students pay an entry fee and skate!
o 5th grade activities -
Pancake Breakfast: Tomahawk’s annual Pancake Breakfast, hosted by 5th grade families, funds the next year’s 6th grade trip to Wildwood Outdoor Education Center, where students engage in two days of outdoor problem-solving and team-building activities.
Ice Cream Social/Meet the Teacher: Summer is coming to an end, but cool off and meet up with friends for the sweetest way to go back to school! The Ice Cream social help the 5th grade raise funds for Wildwood.
o Food Nights: Make dinner with the family easy by joining us for a Food Night at a local restaurants. Keep an eye out for flyers announcing places, dates and times to show up and eat. Families show up, eat and socialize while the participating restaurant donates a portion of the evening’s sales to Tomahawk. The best part? No dishes!
o Carnival: Tomahawk’s Carnival attracts the entire school, former students and families, and the surrounding community. Offering inflatables, games and food, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
o Trivia Night: Tomahawk’s Adult Only event is a night full of fun, drinks and a light-hearted trivia contest.
o Walk to School: Get out, get moving and get to know who lives in your neighborhood by walking to school.
o Trunk or Treat: Love ghosts, ghouls and all things creepy? Sign up to decorate your trunk and share goodies and games with trick-or-treating students.
o Kindergarten Events: Once we get the kids Rounded Up in April, we invite your kiddo and family back in August for a Popsicle on the Playground. This event is typically a few days before Kindergarten starts. Once the K's start school, we invite the adults to Koffee and Kleenex's just after 8:10 AM. Will your Kleenex be used for sad tears or happy ones?!
o Yearbook/School Pictures: This keepsake is full of memories made as a Tomahawk Tiger.
o School Directory: Want to schedule a play date, or invite friends to an event but don’t know how to contact them? The school directory connects families for outside school hours.
o Science Night: Tomahawk invites local groups to provide hands-on, engaging demonstrations, including physics, food science, and animals.
o 6th grade activities: In their final year at Tomahawk, 6th grade celebrates their hard work and success. In the Fall, they travel to Wildwood Outdoor Education Center to learn problem-solving skills and teamwork through outdoor activities. Any leftover proceeds from Wildwood fundraising sponsors a graduation party in the Spring. Sixth graders also get a preview of their middle school by participating in 6th grade Olympics at Indian Hills.
o Citizenship Essays: The National PTA hosts an annual essay and poetry contest for 5th and 6th graders based around a citizenship related theme. All 5th and 6th grade Tomahawk students participate. The essays and poems are judged, and the winners move on to the Shawnee Mission regional contest with a possibility of being chosen to move on to the state contest.
o Field Day: PTA coordinates with the P.E. teacher to help organize 6th grade and parent volunteers and snacks for a day of outdoor fun. Grades K-3 participate in morning activities and grades 4-6 in the afternoon.
o Cultural Arts Events: Performers, artists, and musicians visit Tomahawk twice yearly to enrich students’ experience as a world citizen through the arts. Past events have included a Native American tribe, dance and tools demonstration; an African storyteller; a watercolor artist; and the JCCC theater group, which writes plays based on stories and myths from cultures around the world.
o Talent Show: Students create, practice and hone their talents to share in front of the school, family and friends! Any participants must fill out an entry form and perform a short preview before being accepted into the show.
